Indigo —indigo dye, xiquilite, ch’oj, k’an ch’oj— is more than a pigment: it is a nexus where botanical knowledge, material processes, and aesthetic sensibility converge. The indigo plant, especially the Indigofera guatemalensis variety, is well-known for its chromatic strength that ranks it amongst the most intense natural blues in the world. However, its deepness is not immediately revealed. Unlike other plant-based dyes, the blue of indigo emerges only after a transformative process involving fermentation, aeration, and oxidation—stages in which the pigment progressively unveils itself. In this transition, plant matter is transmuted into pigment allowing color to gradually emerge, moving from the invisible to the visible. This transformative quality places indigo within a liminal space: a threshold where matter, time, and technique converge to produce color.

It is from this condition of transit that ‘Sensitive Liminal: Transitory Shades’ arises—a collective exhibition that explores indigo as a territory for material and perceptive experimentation. The exhibition gathers diverse approaches to the pigment, observing the spectrum of hues, densities, and textures that emerge when indigo enters dialogue with different supports and techniques. Textiles, canvases, fibers, ceramics, and other material languages become spaces where color unfolds, revealing its capacity to adapt, mutate, and generate unexpected nuances.

Within this context, indigo functions as a unifying thread between diverse practices. Each artwork approaches the pigment from a singular sensibility, evidencing its chromatic power and material versatility.At the intersection of Olga Reiche’s twenty years of work with her brand Indigo and the third anniversary of Fragmentum Gallery, this exhibition brings together art pieces that expand the material and chromatic possibilities of indigo.
